Eye & Dental Camp for School Students

Dental Camp detects a high number of children requiring pulpectomy

Bhopal: In a free screening camp for eye and dental held by Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital from 21 – 29 July, 2022 for school students, a high number of children were found to require a pulpectomy.

This is a dental treatment for removing any infected or diseased pulp from the tooth, something equivalent to a root canal treatment in adults. It is often the best option for saving a primary (baby) tooth in children.

A hundred students from 1349 screened needed a pulpectomy. The students were ranging from class 1 to 12th.

Is this a cause of concern and a recent trend?

“ One of ten children have this problem which needs pulpectomy, “ says Dr Hansa Dudani, Dental Surgeon at Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital’s dental clinic and the lead dentist at the conducted camp.

“ One of the main culprits is the low-fibre and high junk food that children eat nowadays, says Dr. Dudani. In the screening camp, 250 children required filling and 70 needed extractions.
But asking children to bid farewell to junk food may not be a sustainable solution. Catch a child having a high-fibre diet by choice.

Agrees Dr Dudani, who has been practising for 8 years in Bhopal. “We cannot expect children not to eat chocolate or junk food, but parents can teach their children oral hygiene. Brushing twice, before going to bed must be made mandatory” opines Dr Dudani.

“ To prevent cavities, application of fluoride is also preventive” advises this young dentist who has studied

There is a low incidence visiting a dentist regularly. As for adults, children too should visit a dentist for an annual check is the advise of Dr Dudani.
