A one-day national workshop on ‘Cornea Diagnostic-2024’ was organised by Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on 7th October 2024. As many as 72 ophthalmologists participated in it.
The workshop was part of ‘Prayogshala’ connect programme of All India Ophthalmic Society (AIOS) and was conducted in collaboration with AIOS, Madhya Pradesh Ophthalmic Society and Bhopal Division Ophthalmic Society.
Dr. Sushmita Shah, Cornea and Refractive Surgeon, Eye Life Hospital, Mumbai was the keynote speaker for the workshop. In her address, Dr Shah said that in medical science, latest equipment plays a big role in the errorless treatment of cornea. She said that with the help of new equipment such as anterior segment OCT, Sirius Topography, Specular Microscopy, accurate treatment of cornea is now possible. In her presentation cum lecture, Dr. Shah explained the methods of accurate treatment of corneal ulcers and dry eyes through microbiological assessment method.
Dr. Prerna Upadhyay, Medical Director of Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital welcomed the participants of the workshop and expressed gratitude to the All India Ophthalmic Society for providing Sewa Sadan an opportunity to organise the workshop. In her address, Dr. Prerna hoped that cornea specialist will now be able to know about innovative methods this field and upgrade their skill and apply it for treatment and betterment of cornea patients.
Managing Trustee, Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital, Shri A.C. Sadhwani informed the audience that very soon the new hospital building which is under construction on Airport Road will be operational. On getting this additional facility, Sewa Sadan will be able to serve the more people effectively in the field of blindness control.
At the workshop, Medical Director of Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital, Dr. Prerna Upadhyay, Cornea Specialist Dr. Shubha Rai; representing Bhopal Division Ophthalmic Society (BDOS) were Dr. Gajendra Chawla, President, BDOS, Dr. Vasudha Damle, Secretary, BDOS and members Dr. Mrs. Swarana Bisaria, Dr. Rahul Agarwal, Dr. K.L. Gupta, Dr. Vijay Nichlani were present. Also gracing the occasion were Managing Trustee of Sewa Sadan Shri A.C. Sadhwani, Trustees Shri Mahesh Dayaramani, Shri Hero Gyanchandani, Shri Suresh Awatramani and Shri Tulsi Adwani. Sant Sewak Shri L.C. Janiyani, Shri Hero Keswani and staff of the hospital were present.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Shubha Rai Senior manager Kushal Dharmani expressed his gratitude; hospital officials Bharti Janiyani and Anusha Tiwari were also present.
Nisha Solanki belongs to a large family of two brothers and four sisters (of whom 3 are married). Both her brothers and elder sister attend school. Nisha’s father is mentally challenged. The responsibility of earning is on the mother, who is a daily wage farm labourer and grandmother, who tends to her goats. Two earing members for a family of ten.
Blindness in children leads to deep impact on psychological, emotional, and socioeconomic growth to the family. A child with blindness is more likely to have delays in developmental milestones, to be more frequently hospitalized, and die during childhood than a sighted child. Such severe vision loss also adversely effects the educational activities, orientation, and mobility from the early stage of life resulting in lack of employment privilege. These differential characteristics between a sighted and non-sighted child is more obvious in developing countries. Moreover, the disability adjusted life years (DALY) loss in a blind child is far more than that of adults with blindness.
